What was read at your wedding and why?

We marry lots of peeps here at York Street. In the spirit of minimising some of the choices in my previous post, I now here list the Bible verses we ask people to consider as readings and then to choose from for their wedding:
Are we missing any?

What was read at your wedding and why?

I think we had the love verse (I think it's the law that you must have it at a wedding).

But more importantly (and one you missed), we had Malachi 2:10-16, which was then used as the basis for the sermon.

I think it's the only wedding I've been to where the topic of the sermon was divorce!

Katrina and I had (exactly one year ago this Sunday!) Gen 2:15-25 and Rev 21:1-4 - the beginning and the end...

We had Ps 37. I think only vv1-9 but maybe we included 23-29?). I still remember the 4 alphabetical main points of the sermon from it which were Accept, Believe, Commit & Delight (otherwise known as Antipasto, Beef, Chicken & Dessert). We also had Eph 4: 1-16.

We had a condensed version of all of Song of Songs and Psalm 107:1-22 & 43 (which was used in the sermon) I have Hesed and Emet on my wedding ring :)

We had the Ephesians 5 passage at our real wedding (in the USA) and then had the Matthew 19 passage about divorce in our Aussie ceremony! It was paired with Genesis 2, but it was still quite provocative.

We had Hosea 2:16-23 and Ephesians 5:22-33. Bible talk was on the Hosea reading.

It was to remind us (and our guests) that the marriage relationship is based on that of God and his people. God loves his people, even dying for them, even though they prostitute themselves out to other gods.

Somewhat unusual, but lots of fun. And well received (preacher did a top job).

Proverbs 5:18-21

Song of Songs 7

Ephesians 5:21-33

We wanted to capture some of the joy and rapture of a couple emotionally, physically, uniquely and exclusively devoted to each other that the Bible expresses so beautifully that also wonderfully informs our understanding of the relationship we have in Christ.

As per Ian, we went with Malachi 2. We wanted to "do violence" to the idea of light-weight commitment in marriage.

"God hates divorce" is pretty offensive message mind you, so we spoke beforehand with our divorced friends and family (including Lucy's parents) to explain why we chose this passage.

We read from John 14 about the vine and the branches. It was actually a suggestion in the English BCP service, and it had special meaning for Clint. I think it was meaningful because of the implication that the couple is actually abiding in God, we have an unconditional love as the foundation for our (only too human) love.

We had Psalm 100 (from which we later took 4 verses as "dedications" for our 4 children) and Ephesians 5.

I have also heard a great wedding sermon on Ephesians 3:14-21 - a prayer for the individuals, now one, to in their marriage understand the extravagant dimensions of God's love in Christ...

We had Colossians 3:12-17 mainly because it is such a great call to live out faith through love and grace.
It is a challenge to live that way.

We had Luke 17.27. "Ever since the days of Noah, people were eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage. Then the flood came and destroyed them all."

So many of our friends and family had never heard a sermon before, so we decided on a bit of drama, and perspective. Gavin Wilcox preached a clear and joyful sermon.
