Lady Sydney

The second is from Mark, who lives in Sydney:
Here's a haiku for Sydney (at least I think it is!):

Em'rald Oz city;
Spiritual, idolatrous;
That glittering tart.
Describe your city as a woman HERE or on your own Blog. Feel free to write something new about any city already taken (New York, Sydney, Edinburgh).

Edit by Mark: Em'rald, rather than Emerald.

Depends whether you pronounce "emerald" in two or three syllables. Both appear in my dictionary.

How about this Byron?

Em'rald city of Oz;
Spiritual, idolatrous;
That glittering tart.

There's something quite Australian about clipping words anyway.

Yes, particularly since Oz is already clipped. Unfortunately, to make the second line fit, you need "spiritual" to be sounded out in all four syllables. It can't be "sp'rich'ul", as it would often be in lazy Oz.

You're a tough marker Byron! :)

Doesn't a Haiku have three lines of 5-7-5 syllables?

So in the second line I count 3 for 'spiritual' and 4 for 'idolatrous' = 7.

Oops, you're right. I had mistakenly remembered it as 5-8-5.

My entire Haiku instruction is from 'Wayne's World'. So I'm more than happy to challenged on that one!
