Links in Yellow...

New 200 words coming soon.

But your advice first: As you know, I put my links in yellow. I do it, because I want people to follow through with some of the links, and I like it to be striking. But a good brother Face-booked me with this note:
I read your blog on google reader, but I normally don't end up reading your blogs because all your links are in a yellow font, making it really difficult to read. It hurts my eyes so I stop reading. I thought you may be interested to know, because maybe other people have the same issues, or maybe you would just like to change it on account of me ;-)
Are there any others who don't read my posts because the links are in Yellow? Get rid of the yellow? What color do I replace it with?

Thanks.

The yellow causes no problem to me, but I would suggest that it is perhaps the level of contrast of the yellow on the blue which may be causing your friend's problem-not the use of yellow itself.
Yellow and blue is one of the safest colour options for legibility as the contrast in hues can be read by those even with full colour-blindness as well as the more common form of colour blindness such as red/green.

Perhaps changing the hue to a warmer one (ie closer in the spectrum to orange) may help.

Or perhaps your friend had a very bad experience at Ikea-for which there may be no cure!

Yeah, I have the same problem in bloglines. Why not go blue like everyone else?

On your blog page the yellow is a great contrast to the dark blue, but on google reader, or any other feed reader with a white background the yellow is difficult to see. It doesn't stop me reading, but it would be easier with a different colour.

I have the same problem in google reader. Why not just let the links come out as the web browser does it by default?

As for what colour - in google reader by default you get a white background, so anything that works against a white background would be fine.

same problem using feedemon. Something like red would be better.

Difficult in google reader. i often stop reading because it takes time to go to your blog instead of just using reader. i know it sounds lame but...

+1 blogline reader; it's a real eyesore, the yellow on white.

I've heard you all. Next post shall be in blue or some other dead color!

Didn't know this was such a hot issue! Your yellow links on google reader made me click through and open your original page - thought it was just me...

I was actually considering emailing you about this very issue - I find it real hard to read on google reader.

How do you set the yellow? Is it in the template, or have you selected a link colour for it?

I'm trying to find a way you can keep your yellow on the page, but make it normal in RSS, or something like that.

If you can tell me how you do it, I'll figure out a way to make it work (hopefully).

I like the yellow when I visit your blog but yes it is hard when i read you in reader esp when you put lots of links in...they are good value too. Perhaps a red or green or even orange?

I'm with everyone else (painful to read on Shrook) and feel silly for not saying something about it myself sooner.

Rodeoclown -- you are gifted!

Byron -- no, you are the *only* one who said anything to me (about 2 years ago), and you just said that you'd click through to the Blog. I didn't hear anything from anyone else, so let it go...

What about cerese or aquamarine or quava?

Or perhaps telling people to take their colour preferences and ..................

Ditto on the yellow problem--I read on Google reader. So, I usually highlight the text, which makes them legible.

hey Jman,

Yes - the yellow sucks in Google Reader.

But to fix it, all you need to do is go into your template - click edit html - and replace this:

#main a:link, #main a.comment-link:visited {
color:#9df;
}
#main a:visited {
color:#7a9;
}
#main a:hover {
color:#fff;
}

with this:

#main A:link, #main A:visited, #main A:hover {
COLOR: #FFFF33;
FONT-WEIGHT: bold;
}
#comments-block a:link, #comments-block a:visited, #comments-block a:hover {
COLOR: #9df
}

Walshy. Genius. No doubt.

But can I keep my links yellow? What colors will your HTML changes bring?

RodeoClown said...

Hi Justin, I sent you an email about 12 hours ago with details for changing it so the yellow shows up in your blog, but not in the feeds.

I emailed it to hotmail address in your profile page.

It's subject is 'Yellow Links'

Justin said...

Rodeoclown -- thanks. But can you resend it? I can't find it!

when I find readability difficult, I hit CTRL A, to select all, as that switches colours to the highlighter and font colours I chose for my windows theme.
