What makes God look Glorious?

This video clip is John Piper at his God-given best: Strong, profound, pastoral and devastatingly simple.

These three minutes settle the matter for me: I will not give ground to the prosperity gospel, and I will speak openly against it. There is too much at stake. The alternative life (suffering in and for Christ) has a Power that the proponents of the prosperity gospel cannot and will not understand.

(Warning: there is a profoundly sad story mentioned at 1:30, for the sensitive).

H/T Christine

Great stuff...saw that a while ago and forgot about it...That piece stirs my blood everytime I hear it...come to think of it Piper rarely doesn't stir my heart. Love his book 'God is the gospel'...a really important book for now I think.

Reesy, J-man, this is why you leave the comfort of your home land, eh?
I haven't heard that message in a single church since I arrived in America. And every time I sing about it, you can see eyes glazing over.
It is a strange thing to be a part an industry built so heavily on popularity, and feel convicted to sing a truth that you know will deliberately make you unpopular.
But, God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him...
I pray for you guys.

God be with you both, Reesy and NT.

Fullwood, UK; Nashville, TN; New York, NY? We ought to have a Facebook group for St Ives people doing ministry overseas!

hey, Justin, an unrelated comment responding to your comments on my blog. Thanks for those kind words. Yes, I remember those talks on Isaiah back in 1989. I look back on it and think of myself as a chef's apprentice let loose on the filet mignon for 200. Still, with a feast like that, even the most blundering attempts can hardly go wrong, can they?

Yes, Alan and Lynne Turner—funnily enough they mentioned you the other day as the lad they taught in Sunday school 20 years ago. Nice. we are encouraging as many St Paul's 5.00 Carlo to get along to Engage conference, so it will be an opportunity for you to see them again. I'm hoping to get along too.

God bless.

We'd be there! (the facebook group) Actually, Stefan has developed quite a passion for facebook in the last week or so, and every day I get updates on how many 'friends' he has! (maybe that will change once school goes back...)
Anyway, thanks for the comments on our blog, it's great to hear from you.
And Ed & Gill's visit was great. Sad to see them go.

Justin,
Can't wait to talk with you about how the prosperity gospel has swept across Africa.

Went to John Piper's church in MN... it was interesting, but he wasn't speaking.

Great!

Went to John Piper's church in MN... it was interesting, but he wasn't speaking.

And here is the golden question: You came to church, but did you get what you came for???

Thats the difficult thing when you have a celebrity as a pastor! :)
